Director’s Letter
We are so excited to see the progress on the new shelter addition. Below is a great “in progress” picture. We look forward to being in our new facility in March!
Current Events
Our 4th Annual Ladies Luncheon was held again this past weekend at the Dunes Club. We were blessed with almost double the sponsors and more tickets sold than ever. A special thanks to the ladies committee that worked so hard to make this such a special day. Also, two of our shelter guests were baptized this weekend. It just doesn’t get much better than this!
- A family with two children has found employment and housing locally and will be moving this week.
- Our in-house veteran has some part-time work and is expecting to have another job shortly with more hours.
- Our youngest male guest has 65% hearing loss in both ears. We contacted the Lions Club and they will be sending two hearing aids. Also, he has been accepted to go to The Salvation Army Center in Greenville, SC for training.
- One of our male guests found work at Kroger and is putting in many extra hours as he saves for his own housing.
Web Site
Our new and improved website is up and running. We will be continually updating, so please check us out at www.NorthStrandHousingShelter.org.
Volunteers & Sponsors
Spring will be here shortly and we are quickly preparing for the move into our additional facility. The contractor has told us that we should have our certificate of occupancy by the end of February or the first of March.
Your faithfulness has been obvious through the hard work and generosity shown to the men, women and children at NSHS you served in 2014. Last year we received calls representing 753 people of which 142 were children. There is still so much work to be done.
Most of our fundraisers are in the first half of the year, which makes for challenging months ahead. Thank you to shelter supporters for volunteering and sponsoring our events. Since we receive no government support for operations, these events are very important to us.
Please check out our events section below and on our website.
Volunteer Story
There are so many people that have stepped up and helped the shelter in many ways. Our regular volunteers are priceless but we do have some stories that touch the heart by persons that are not always involved in the shelter’s daily or weekly business.
After we had our fire in the existing building, with the power off, the freezers and refrigerators were a smelly mess. No one wanted to take on the job of cleaning these appliances. One day, while at the shelter, a lady arrived to volunteer to clean the appliances. This lady, Evelyn Parish (pictured above), is a medical doctor. She did a great job and did not mind dirtying her hands to do something that no one else was willing to do. Thank you to Miss Evelyn!!!
New Facility Kitchen
We have also had a couple from Barefoot Community Church purchase our first piece of kitchen equipment for the new facility. They bought a commercial refrigerator. We are praying for other donations of equipment. If you can help with this, just call our (843) 756-9488 number. Some are as inexpensive as a couple hundred dollars. We are expanding our yearly food count from around 16,800 meals per year to over 40,000 meals per year, so we can use all the help we can get.
A special thanks again to the supporters and volunteers of the shelter that have given in so many ways. We pray that God will bless you in all that you do for Him. Please come see us when we open the new addition!
Blessings, Dana Black

A special thanks to Floyd and Sandy Young of Living Waters Baptist Church for their donation of a 2004 BMW motorcycle. There will be a drawing in late Spring.
